If you are familiar with Lamorinda 1950’s ranch-style homes, you are familiar with the classic galley kitchen layout they often come with! Galley kitchens are highly functional because all of the cooking appliances are nearby, but because of their small size, they are not functional for entertaining. Our team quickly realized there was a lack of quality, aesthetically beautiful galley kitchens that could be both functional, warm and inviting.
When a Burton Valley homeowner who had lived 47 years in their home asked for a galley-kitchen makeover, the Gatherhouse team was determined to create a beautiful kitchen without needing to expand the footprint of the home. It was important that all design elements felt timeless in this home. From the Italian range to the antique bronze finishes, to the beveled edge and arched details, all material selections harmoniously complemented each other. By removing the track lighting and dark countertops and elevating the height of the cabinets, the design team was able to accentuate the natural light of the space, making the galley kitchen feel twice the size it was originally. They extended the hardwood floors into the kitchen so the home felt more cohesive, and the wood warmed up the home against the painted cabinetry. The use of marble paired with handcrafted zellige tile created an authentic, organic design appeal, highlighting the beauty of our California landscape and lifestyle. When designing a kitchen to stand the test of time, Teresa Fadelli recommends selecting natural materials like marble or quartzite over man-made materials like porcelain or quartz. These countertops were sealed with an AntiEtch so wine stains or cooking spills are never a worry! The final piece in this home was the custom hood, coated with roman clay to provide a cloud-like appearance and plaster texture.
